When On Angels Wings reached out to photograph this Fresh 48 session, I didn’t know the full story at first.

I knew they were expecting. I knew they were local.

But what I didn’t know—until the mama gently told me—was that they had lost a baby not long ago.

This new little one was their rainbow. And their hearts were still healing.

But Axten, the baby this momma lost, was just as present in the room as the rest of us.

Tucked gently on the bed was a bear, lovingly created to match Axten’s exact weight at birth.

I still get chills thinking about it.

The moment mom held that bear in one arm and her newborn in the other was… quiet. Sacred. Heavy in all the ways that matter.

As a photographer—and someone who’s walked through deep personal grief myself—I carry those stories carefully. With softness. With reverence. With the understanding that every photo we take is more than a pose.

It’s a memory.

A marker in time.

A quiet form of healing.

During their session, I focused on the tiny details: the way dad cradled his new baby’s head. The way mom’s eyes brimmed with tears, even while smiling. The way big brother's bear laid gently next to the baby.

We created images that honored both of their children—the one in their arms and the one forever in their hearts.

Why These Sessions Matter

Grief and joy often live side by side. And photography has the power to hold both.

That’s why I approach every newborn photography session in Edwardsville, IL not just as a photographer, but as a witness. A storyteller. Someone who understands that this moment—this season—is never just about a pretty photo.

It’s about memory. Healing. And legacy.
