How to Prepare for Your Family Session (Without Losing Your Mind)

If you're reading this, chances are you've booked a family session and are already wondering:

"What should we wear?"

"What if my kids don't cooperate?"

"What if my husband hates taking pictures?"

"What if everything falls apart?"

First, take a deep breath.

As a mom of three boys, I can confidently tell you this:

The families who arrive perfectly coordinated, smiling from ear to ear, and cooperating on command are mostly mythical creatures.

And that's okay.

The goal of your family session isn't perfection.

It's connection.

Here are a few simple tips to help your session feel relaxed, fun, and stress-free.

# 1. Stop Stressing About Perfect Behavior

This is the biggest one.

Kids are going to be kids.

They may run.

They may wiggle.

They may make silly faces.

They may refuse to smile.

They may suddenly decide they only want to be held.

That's all normal.

In fact, some of my favorite images happen when children are simply being themselves.

The goal isn't to force perfect smiles for an hour.

The goal is to capture your family exactly as they are in this season.

# 2. Choose Coordinating Outfits, Not Matching Outfits

Gone are the days of everyone wearing white shirts and jeans.

Instead, choose colors that complement one another.

A few tips:

* Stick to 2-4 coordinating colors

* Avoid large logos and busy patterns

* Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably

* Dress slightly more elevated than everyday life

Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident.

If Mom feels good, everyone feels good.

# 3. Don't Bribe Your Kids With Ice Cream

I know.

This sounds controversial.

But when children are promised a giant reward for surviving photos, they often spend the entire session asking when it's over.

Instead, tell them you're going to spend some time playing together and having fun.

Keep expectations low and the mood light.

# 4. Trust the Process

One of the things I hear most often during sessions is:

"I don't think we're getting anything."

And then parents see their gallery and are completely shocked.

The magic often happens between poses.

The laughs.

The cuddles.

The nose scrunches.

The hand holding.

The way your child reaches for you without thinking.

Trust me.

I've got you.

# 5. Let Dad Off the Hook

Dads, if you're reading this, I have good news.

I know family photos aren't usually at the top of your weekend wish list.

I promise to keep things moving, make it painless, and avoid awkward poses.

Most dads leave saying:

"That wasn't nearly as bad as I thought."

Honestly, that's one of my favorite compliments.

# 6. Focus on the Why

Years from now, your kids won't care if someone's shirt wrinkled.

They won't notice the cowlick.

They won't remember whether everyone smiled perfectly.

What they'll see is proof that they were loved.

They'll see the way you held them.

The way you looked at them.

The way your family felt.

That's what we're preserving.

Not perfection.

Connection.

Final Thoughts

Your family session isn't about creating a picture-perfect version of your life.

It's about documenting the beautiful, messy, joyful season you're living right now.

The missing teeth.

The baby curls.

The goofy personalities.

The hand-holding.

The chaos.

Because these are the moments that feel ordinary today and become priceless tomorrow.

So come as you are.

I'll take care of the rest.
